Barbara Bry & Erna Adelson

Athena's original founder Barbara Bry and Incoming Chair of the Board Erna Adelson, use their expertise and experience to help women leaders within some of the nations leading companies in the fields of technology, life sciences, defense and engineering.
Barbara Bry is the chief operating officer of Blackbird Ventures and has been on the founding team of two companies and three nonprofit organizations. Barbara was a co-founder of Atcom, the leader in developing Internet kiosks and high-speed Internet access in hotel rooms. The company was sold in 1999 in a transaction valued at $80 million and is now owned by Cisco. In addition, Barbara was on the founding management team of Proflowers.com, which completed a successful initial public offering in December 2003 as Provide Commerce (PRVD).
Barbara is also the founder of UCSD Athena, San Diego’s premier organization for women technology executives and entrepreneurs. She spent 10 years at the University of California, San Diego where she was the first associate director of CONNECT, which has received international recognition for its efforts in linking technology entrepreneurs with the resources they need for success. Most recently, she served as the founding editor and CEO of Voice of San Diego, an innovative news and information website which has been featured nationally for its leadership in community based journalism.
In the community, Barbara is a member of San Diego Rotary Club 33, the San Diego Women’s Foundation and San Diego Social Venture Partners. She was a member of the Business Advisory Council for the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and has taught entrepreneurship classes at the University of San Diego and UC San Diego Extension.
Erna Adelson’s expertise is in managing the evolution of information technology and helping the companies use technical change for strategic advantage. She is a Solution Architect at Sony Network Entertainment Inc., which is extending the PlayStation Network to all Sony devices. She is charged with cross-company integration of services with special emphasis on data governance for consumer-facing applications. She also serves as an advisor to the Board of iChanneX.
Ms. Adelson spent eight years with Sony Electronics, most recently as Senior Vice President and CTO of Information Systems where she was responsible for Enterprise Architecture -- including application architecture, middleware and application integration, master data, data warehouse and business intelligence reporting applications, social networking applications/web2.0 and innovation within business systems. Her teams worked closely with Sony Electronics’ business units to integrate information systems platform assets with consumer electronics products.
In addition to her involvement with Athena, Ms. Adelson is a mentor with Women Unlimited and with The Rady School at UCSD; she also volunteers as a Trail Patrol member for the SD County Department of Parks and Recreation and is active in the Ramona Trails Association, promoting non-motorized trail access development in the east county.
